The purpose of this lesson is to practice citing evidence from a literary text. We will read a passage from the novel  First, sit back and relax as I read this passage to you. Make sure you track along with me with a pencil or your finger. Next, I will show you how to find a detail that relates to our guiding question. Finally, you will respond to the following question.

About the Book

Wanda Petronski is ridiculed by her classmates for wearing the same faded blue dress every day. She claims she has one hundred dresses at home, but everyone knows she doesn’t. When Wanda is pulled out of school one day, the class feels terrible, and classmate Maddie decides that she is "never going to stand by and say nothing again." Did you know that good readers use various strategies to help them comprehend texts?

One strategy readers use is called, making inferences. Making inferences is a comprehension strategy used by proficient readers to “read between the lines,” make connections, and draw conclusions about the text’s meaning and purpose.
You already make inferences all of the time. For example, imagine you go over to a friend’s house and they point at the sofa and say, “Don’t sit there, Cindy came over with her baby again.” What could you logically conclude?First, you know there must be a reason not to sit where your friend is pointing. Next, the reason not to sit there is related to the fact that Cindy just visited with her baby. You don’t know what exactly happened, but you can make an inference and don’t need to ask any more questions to know that you do not want to sit there.

Who is one person that you look up to and why? Your response should be a complete paragraph (topic sentence, 2-3 supporting sentences and a concluding sentence. You can always use the hamburger graphic organizer to help you lay out your response.

The stores are full of red and pink candy, flowers, teddybears, heart shaped balloons and much more all in the name of L.O.V.E.! Many recognize this day in the U.S. and all around the world. It's a day to show love and appreciation to their family, friends and maybe even a, "special someone". However, some believe Valentine's Day shouldn't be celebrated at all. 


Based on the articles we read about this holiday, what do you believe? Write an argumentative paragraph or essay stating your claim. Remember, you must cite evidence and support your claim.

Do you feel anxious when presented with word problems? Worry no more! There are tricks and strategies to get them done quickly and easily. This assignment will focus on using CUBES to help you with word problems. 

The purpose of this assignment  is to begin to voice your own opinion and perspective while respecting that others may have different perspectives about the same topic.

If you could be anyone for another day who would you be and what would you do on that day? Use the hamburger graphic organizer to help outline your paragraph.


Remember to hook your reader in, give reasons and details why you would choose this person, then write a concluding sentence. Must include 4-5 sentences.

Today you will each conference one-on-one with me to discuss your personal and academic goals. Also, we will complete the writing prompt, Risky Thinking to answer the following question: What's the greatest risk you've taken this year?
