Curriculum

Course Description:

 

The Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) are designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills for proficiency in eighth grade English Language Arts (ELA).  The ELA GSE address the expanding interests and needs of the middle school student through high expectations in the areas of independent reading, literature, reading and writing across the curriculum, and listening, speaking and viewing, supported by technology. The overall result of mastery in these areas should be the ability to apply the knowledge and skills to problems and situations that promote creative and critical thinking.

 

 

Readers’ Workshop

 

Students will be required to participate in daily Accountable Independent Reading (AIR), providing students with the opportunity to choose fiction or non-fiction books to read and react to independently. Students’ progress will be monitored through reading reaction written response assignments, fluency logs, one-on-one teacher conferences and Accelerated Reader quizzes (AR).

 

 

Text:

The students will use the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing into Literature, as well as other short stories and anchor text novels as they are approved.

 

Grading Procedures:           

Classwork = 20%   Achieve 3000 Activities, Reading Analysis, Annotations

Quizzes = 25%  AR Quizzes, Grammar Quizzes 

Tests = 40%  Reading Tests, Written On-Demands, and Final Drafts

Notebooks/Projects = 15% Book Talks, Notebook Checks
