About the GMS Band Program
The Glynn Middle Band Program is a comprehensive course where students learn the art of music through learning to play an instrument. Students begin in the 6th grade where they learn the fundamental techniques and basic skills of playing their instrument and they then continue to develop and master those skills through the 7th and 8th grade. The Band Program consists of the four ensembles: the 6th Grade Beginning Band, 7th and 8th Grade Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, and the Pep Band.
The GMS Band performs two full concerts each year; one in December and one in May. The 7th and 8th Grade Band also prepares a Festival program each March to perform at the GMEA Large Group Performance Evaluations. GMS Bands also perform for community events such as Christmas parades and Relay-for-Life and have performed abroad at locations such as Universal Studios, Walt Disney World, Carowinds, Six Flags, Sea World, and the Georgia Governor's Mansion.
The GMS Symphonic Band is the top performing group of the band program and has consistently received superior ratings at evaluations and competitions. This group was named the OrlandoFest Grand Champion in 2015 and 2019, the Festival Disney Runner-up in 2017, and the Southern Star Music Festival Grand Champion in 2018. On an individual level, GMS Band students are selected every year to participate in the All-District, All-Region, and All-State Honor Bands.
